kandovan village

Located on steep mountain flank of Sahand, northwest of Iran, Kandovan village is well known for its exquisite rocky architecture. The landscape of this picturesque village, which has one of the best climate and the cleanest air in the country, is made by volcanic activities. The accumulated masses of volcanic lava and ash which has been formed by wind and rain falls over thousand of years, provided special room for local houses which are called “Karan” in the local dialect. It is believed that people who were fleeing from Mongol invaders first came to this village for refuge and then settled here for good.
